Comfy Fair Isle Hat




Machine: Standard gauge with a ribber

Yarn: 2 colors of 2/24

Tension: 2

  • Using 2 ends of one color of the 2/24 yarn, cast on in a 1 x 1 rib arrangement over 80L X 80R (or 85L X 85R if a little bigger hat is desired) needles; Left most N on the ribber, right most needle on the main bed
  • Tension 0/0; Zig zag row, hang comb and weights; run ribber carriage only to drop rib stitches for a Broken Toe Cast On
  • Repeat zig zag row
  • Set for circular knitting on both carriages; K 2 rows
  • Remove carriage settings
  • RC 000
  • Tension 2; Rib 9/10 rows, ending with COL
  • Remove one end of the 2/24 yarn
  • Move all ribber sts to main bed
  • Tension 2
  • Prepare electronic pattern or punch card (I used Stitch World 1 – pattern #25); Punch a card as follows:
    • oxox
    • ooxo
    • oxox
    • xooo
  • KC button
  • K 1 R to right to select needles with 1 strand 2/24 (going past turn mark for electronic)
  • Add 1 strand of second color for fair isle
  • Push in MC button
  • K to RC 90 -100 ending with COL; if a slouchy hat is desired K to approximately RC 130
  • Remove 1 end of the 2/24 yarn; Make sure you have a strand in the main slot even if you change colors
  • Move every other st to the right, doubling sts and pushing empty needles out of work
  • K 3 rows ending on the right; knitting last row Tension 4
  • Remove sts on a doubled strand of yarn with a tapestry needle
  • Pull Broken Toe strands of yarn firm on ribbed edge, laying ribbing neatly
  • Steam ribbing and the rest of the hat to soften acrylic; let dry
  • Remove the Broken Toe yarn and use to mattress stitch up side, pulling top tightly
