Super Simple Child’s Sweater

 

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

This sweater is simple to make because it has drop shoulders (no arm shaping) and a rolled neckline.
Sizes: 7/8, 9/10/, 11/12
Machine: Standard gauge with ribber
Yarn: Tamm 3 ply astracyl
Tension (T) Body – 7; Ribbing 4/4
Gauge: 7 sts and 10 rows per inch
BACK:
• *Row Count (RC) :000; T 0/0
• Cast on (CO) in a 1 X 1 rib over 117,125,135 needles (N) on main bed (MB) and corresponding N on ribber, with end N’s on MB
• Do the Broken Toe CO if desired
• Set carriages (CAR) for circular knitting
• Knit (K) 2 rows (R); remove settings
• T 4/4
• K 20 R ribbing
• Move all stitches (sts) to MB
• RC 000
• T 7*
• E-wrap on 1 St to make an even # of N’s on the MB on both sides of 0
• K 1R (all sizes) with main color (MC)
• If desired you can now knit a few R of stripes of contrasting color (CC) or a few R’s Fair Isle pattern after the ribbing
• K to RC 167, 190, 198
• Set CAR to hold (H)
• Put all N to hold except right 38, 40, 44 N’s in work
• Remove those sts onto waste yarn (WY) and drop from machine; push N’s out of work
• Bring left most 38, 40, 44 N’s into work and remove them onto WY and drop from machine; push N’s out of work
• Bring center N’s into work and take off onto WY and remove from machine
FRONT:
• Follow instructions as for back from * to *
• K any R’s of striped or Fair Isle you have chosen for the back onto the front
• K to RC 137, 160, 158 (yes, those numbers are correct)
• Remove all sts onto WY
• RC 000
• Carriage on right (COR)
• Rehang from WY the right 54, 58, 62 shoulder stitches, purl side facing you; weight
• K 1 R (all sizes)
• SIZE 7/8
o * Decrease 2 sts at left (neck) side (Decrease 2 sts by picking up st on N 2 and moving it to N1. With yarn from carriage, hand knit that doubled st. Then move that st to N2 and push N 1 out of work. Then repeat moving N 2 to N1 and picking up both sts and moving them to N2 without hand knitting it.)
o K 2 R*
o Repeat * to * 4 times
o ** Decrease 1 st at left (neck) side (Decrease 1 st by picking up st on N2 and moving it to N 1, then moving that doubled st back to N2; push N 1 out of work)
o K 2 R**
o Repeat ** to ** 8 times
o K 6 R’s straight to RC 30
• SIZE 9/10
o * Decrease 2 sts at left (neck) side (instructions above)
o K 2 R*
o Repeat * to * 6 times
o **Decrease 1 sts at left (neck) side (instructions above)
o K 2 R**
o Repeat ** to ** 6 times
o K 6 R’s straight to RC 30
• SIZE 11/12
o *Decrease 1 sts on left (neck) side (instructions above)
o K 2 R*
o Repeat * to * 18 times
o K 5 R straight to RC 40
• Remove onto WY and drop from machine
• RC000; COL
• Rehang left 54, 58, 62 shoulder sts from WY; weight
• Repeat directions for your size as for first shoulder – except decreasing on the right (neck) edge
• Remove onto WY and drop from machine
• Rehang 10, 10, 12 center stitches from WY and take off on a separate piece of WY and drop off machine
• Remove first WY that is across whole front piece
SLEEVES:
• CO 41, 41, 43 Sts in a 1 X 1 Rib following the instructions as for back * to *
• RC000
• K 1 R (all sizes)
• K stripes or Fair Isle as for back if desired – remembering to begin the increases
• SIZE 7/8
o K to RC 113 increasing as follows:
o *K 3 R
o Increase 1 st each side*
o Repeat * to * 17 times
o ** K 4 R
o Increase 1 st each side**
o Repeat ** to ** 15 times
o K 1 R to RC 113
• SIZE 9/10
o K to RC 125 increasing as follows:
o *K 3 R
o Increase 1 st on each side*
o Repeat * to * 13 times total
o **K 4 R
o Increase 1 st on each side**
o Repeat ** to ** 21 times total
o K 1 R to RC 125
• SIZE 11/12
o K to RC 140 increasing as follows:
o *K 3 R
o Increase 1 st on each side*
o Repeat * to * 10 times total
o **K 4 R
o Increase 1 st on each side**
o Repeat ** to ** 27 times total
o K 1 R to RC 140
• Bind off (BO) all sizes
• Make second sleeve
BLOCK KNIT PIECES
• Pin out and steam block the 4 knit pieces and let cool and dry
JOIN 1ST SHOULDER OF BACK & FRONT PIECES
• Hang right back shoulder off WY with knit side facing you
• Push behind latches
• Remove WY from back piece
• Hang right front shoulder sts off WY with purl side facing you into the hooks of same N’s (right sides of garment are facing each other)
• Remove WY from front piece
• With a straight edge, move all needles back evenly and pop st in hooks through the sts behind
• One sts on each N now
• BO sts
ROLLED NECK EDGE
• Hold all of neck edge up to N to decide # of N’s and pull N out
• Hang all of neck edge sts, purl side facing you (includes front center WY and back neck WY)
• K 12 – 13 R’s (depending on which side you want to bind off from)
• BO
JOIN 2nd SHOULDER
• Using the instructions for joining the first shoulder, join the second left side shoulder
JOIN SLEEVES TO SWEATER
• Fold sleeves in half to find center point and mark with a pin
• Line up pin with shoulder seam to center sleeve
• Mattress st sleeves to sweater body or machine stitch sleeve to body, one stitch in from edge, after pinning carefully
JOIN UNDERARMS AND FINISH
• Mattress st front to back from bottom edge up and out to edge of sleeve, matching seams at underarm on both sides or machine stitched one st in from edge on sewing machine
• Mattress st rolled neck edge at one shoulder
• Weave in ends
