Yarn: 4 ply – I used 8 oz. skeins of Red Heart; 2 – 3 skeins with some contrasting color

Tension: Rib – 2; Main Body – 5 (Gauge: 4 stitches and 6 rows per inch)

BACK:

  • T (Tension) 0/0 CO (Cast On) 1 X 1 rib over 49 (25 X 24)N (Needles)(55N, 59N)
  • Broken Toe Cast On; 3 circular rows; COL (Carriage on left)
  • RC (Row Count) 000
  • T 2/2
  • Rib 8 R; COL
  • Transfer all sts to MB (Main Bed)
  • RC 000
  • T 5
  • K (Knit) 2 rows
  • Begin a few rows of a Fair Isle pattern or some stripes, if desired, in CC (contrasting color)
  • Remove patterning and CC yarn
  • K to RC 52 (60R, 68R)
  • RC 000
  • Raglan:
  • BO (Bind off) 2 sts at the beg of next 2 R (all sizes)
  • With FF (Full Fashion) Decrease (3 prong tool): decrease both sides of EOR (Every Other Row)to RC 30; End up with 17 sts  (RC 34 end with 19 sts, RC 36 end with 21 sts)
  • Take sts off on WY (Waste Yarn)

FRONTS: Make 1 then reverse shaping on 2 nd front

  • T 0/0 CO 1 X 1 rib over 25 N (12 X 13) (27N, 29N)
  • Broken toe Cast on; 3 circular rows; COL
  • RC 000

  • Transfer all sts to MB

  • Begin a short Fair Isle pattern or some stripes, if desired, in CC
  • K to RC 52 (RC 60, RC 68)

  • Raglan:
  • BO 2 sts on sleeve side ( on 2nd front, bind off on next row so sleeve shaping can begin on opposite side of first sleeve to reverse shaping)
  • FF decrease 1 st EOR for 30 rows on sleeve side only (34R, 36R)
  • At the same time as continuing to shape sleeve: Begin to shape neck starting on RC 20 (plus or minus 1 row for 2nd side) when carriage is on sleeve side of front piece (RC 26 + or – 1 row, RC 26 + or – 1 row)
  • For neck: put carriage to hold position
    • Put 3 sts to hold on side opposite carriage (3, 4)
    • K 1 row; wrap N
    • K 1 row
    • Put 2 sts in Hold position (2, 2)
    • K 1 row; wrap N
    • K 1 row
    • Put 1 st in hold (1,1)

  • Do 2 rows of CC for a stripe, if desired
  • Size 4: FF Increase 1 st at each end of every 8th row 6 times ; 1 st at each end of 9th row 1 time;
    K to RC 57 (45 sts)
  • Size 6: FF increase 1 st at each end of every 9th row 4 times ; 1 st at each end of every 10th row 3 times; K to RC 66 (49 sts)
  • Size 8: FF increase 1 st at each end of every 11th row 6 times;  1 st at each end of every 12th row 1 time; K to RC 78 (51 sts)
  • Raglan:
  • RC000
  • BO 2 sts at the beg of next 2 R (all sizes)
  • Size 4: FF decrease 1 st at each end of EOR 11 times; 1 st at each end of every row 6 times ; 7 sts remain;  K to RC 30
  • Size 6: FF decrease 1 st at each end of EOR 14 times; 1 st at each end of every row 4 times; 9 sts remain; K to RC 34
  • Size 8: FF decrease 1 st at each end of EOR 15 times; 1 st at each end of every row 4 times; 9 sts remain; K to RC 36
  • Take sts off on WY

MAKE UP:

  • Mattress stitch raglan sleeves together

HOOD:

  • Ewrap CO 86 sts (43 X 43)(89, 93)
  • T2
  • K 16 R
  • Hang the hem by putting the stitches from row 1 onto same N
  • RC 000
  • T 5
  • K 44 R (46, 48)
  • Leave a long tail to Kitchener st the back together
  • Take sts off on WY
  • Fold hood in half at WY and Kitchener stitch back of hood together

ATTACHING HOOD:

  • Hang 51 (57, 63) sts of top edge of sweater off WY, purl side facing you
  • COR; Knit 6 R (6, 8)
  • Take sts off with a garter bar, turn and rehang or K a few rows of WY, remove and turn to re-hang; push behind latches (Right or public side facing you now)
  • Hang hood from the bottom of hood onto same N’s; RIGHT sides together; DO NOT hang the very ends that have the opening for the cord – but begin hanging sts beside the opening – each end sts first, then evenly distribute hood across N’s
  • Push all against bed and pull Ns all the way out; close latches
  • COL
  • K 1 R at the loosest tension possible from left to right
  • Loop through a Loop Bind off left to right

MAKE UP:

  • Mattress st underarm seams; weave all ends in
  • Make knitted front bands, one side with buttonholes (See tutorial under MK Techniques For Buttonholes in a Knitted Band) ( I used a 16 R (17 with turning row) band that is doubled to be 8 rows wide)

CORD:

  • Knit approx. 275 – 325 R of I-cord (32 – 38” long – As desired)
  • Insert in hood edge
