Christmas Stocking With Name and Design

Stocking is knit flat with a side seam – not knit in the round

  • Machine:  Standard no ribber
  • Yarn: 3 Ply like Tamm; 2 or 3 contrasting colors
  • Tension: 6
  • Size: approx 8″ X 22″
  • Prepare a punch card or electronically so that each letter that is 8 R high and 5 sts wide; letters are flipped; letters have to fit within 59 sts side to side
  • Prepare a fair isle design for the side of the stocking
  • Prepare a length of finishing yarn in cuff and body color in preparation of knitting single motifs as per your manual to avoid holes next to sides of design

TOP CUFF

  • CO 120 sts with waste yarn (WY) and ravel cord
  • T6
  • RC000
  • Change to cuff yarn and K46 R for lining
  • Knit another 46 more rows, placing fair isle pattern in center of work side to side and center of cuff top to bottom by knitting 19R, 8 R for letters and another 19R to make 46 R; flip letters upside down
  • Hang hem off WY; K1R

LEG

  • RC 000
  • Change yarn to sock body color
  • K 20 to 30 R (depending on how many rows the design is and the placement desired)
  • Prepare to knit fair isle pattern; flip design if there is a definite top and bottom to design; design is centered in work side to side
  • Knit fair isle design on sock as you decrease at the same time if design is long
  • K to RC 110 while decreasing as follows beginning at row 53:
    • Decrease down to 96sts by using a 3-prong tool to dec 1 st at each end of every 4th row 4 times and every 5th row 8 times

HEEL

  • COR; Change back to cuff or another contrasting color and pull left half of sts (48) into hold position; set carriage to hold
  • On right side, short row down to 14 sts as follows:
    • On carr side, pull 1 N on right side to hold position; K 1 R;
    • Pull 1 N on opposite side to hold; repeat until 14 N in work
    • *Wrap N on carriage side
    • Push N on side opposite the carriage into work; K 1 R*
    • Repeat * to * until all N in work; Carriage off hold

FOOT

  • RC000
  • Change to sock body color yarn and knit a total of 58 rows decreasing as follows:
    • Using a 3-prong tool, decrease down to 84sts by decreasing 1 st at each end of
      every 1 st at each end of every 9th row 2 times and every 10th row 4 times

TOE

  • Change to cuff or another contrasting color yarn
  • COR; pull left half of sts (42) into hold position; set carriage to hold
  • On right side, short row down to 13 sts as follows:
    • On carr side, pull 1 N on right side to hold position; K 1 R;
    • Pull 1 N on opposite side to hold; repeat until 14 N in work
    • *Wrap N on carriage side
    • Push N on side opposite the carriage into work; K 1 R*
    • Repeat * to * until all N in work; carriage off hold
  • Remove sock onto WY

MAKE UP

  • Kitchener toe from purl side
  • Mattress st side of sock
  • Make an I-cord to hang stocking and sew to top edge
