Men’s Plus-sized Raglan Sweater

 

  • Machine: Standard with ribber; Optional color changer if using CC for stripes
  • Yarn: 2/17 main yarn (MY) (I used a marled yarn) with a small amount of contrasting color (CC)
  • Gauge at tension 8: 7 sts and 9.5 rows per inch
  • Sizes: 1X, 2X, 3X
  • Chest measurements 48 (52) (56) inches

FRONT:

  • COR; Attach color changer if making stripes on ribbing; tension 0/0; Cast on over 168 (182), (196) N’s in a 1 X 1 rib set up; Zig zag R, hang comb and weights
  • Broken toe cast on as follows: After comb and weights are hung, remove ribber sts by running only the ribber carriage across which drops off all sts from the ribber; return ribber and connect to main bed (MB) carriage; repeat the zig zag row
  • Set the carriages for circular knitting; K 3 R; remove settings; COL
  • Tension: 1/1; Striped ribbing: K 4 R ribbing in MY; COL; change to CC; K 2R; Change to MY; K 2 R; Change to CC; K 2 R; Change to MY; K 10 R
  • Move all sts to MB; put ribber out of work; RC 000
  • Tension 8; K in stockinette for 171 R (171) R (171) R
  • Remove 10 sts on carriage side; K 1 R; remove 10 sts on second side
  • RC 000; K 86 R’s (95) (104) decreasing raglan sleeve, using a 3-prong tool, as follows:
  • Size 1X: Decrease 1 st at each end every 2nd R 42 times; then K 2 R to RC 86 *NOTE
  • Size 2X: Decrease 1 st at each end every 2nd R 45 times; then K 1 R to RC 95; *NOTE
  • Size 3X: Decrease 1 st at each end every 2nd R 48 times to RC 104; *NOTE
  • * NOTE: As you are decreasing raglan sleeves the neck decreases begin also as follows:
  • At RC 58; (66) (76) do the decreases; then put all sts to hold except 24 (27) (29) shoulder sts; carriage to hold; remove those sts onto WY
  • Put 42 (42) (42) center sts into work and remove onto waste yarn (WY)
  • Re-set RC to 58 (66) (76); Carriage setting off hold; *Continue knitting the raglan decreases on remaining sts to the top but at RC 60 (68) (78) you begin the neck decreases as follows: (You are decreasing on both sides at the same time)
  • Size 1X, (2X) (3X): Decrease 1 st at neck edge every 2nd R 7 times (9) (11) times
  • When neck decreases are done you continue to knit the decreases on the raglan side only
  • After decreases are completed; K 2 R (1) (0) R to the top
  • At RC 86 (95) (104) You will have 4 sts remaining. Take off on WY*
  • Re-set RC to 58 (66) (76); Rehang the other shoulder with purl side facing you and repeat * to * for second shoulder

BACK:

  • COR; Attach color changer if making stripes on ribbing; tension 0/0; Cast on over 168 (182), (196) N’s in a 1 X 1 rib set up; Zig zag R, hang comb and weights
  • Broken toe cast on instructions above
  • Set the carriages for circular knitting; K 3 R; remove settings; COL
  • RC 000; Tension: 1/1; Striped ribbing: K 4 R ribbing in MY; COL; holding MY off to left side of machine, change to CC; K 2R; Change to MY; K 2 R; Change to CC; K 2 R; Change to MY; K 10 R
  • Move all sts to MB; put ribber out of work; RC 000
  • Tension 8; K in stockinette for 171 R’s (171) R (171) R
  • Remove 10 sts on carriage side; K 1 R; remove 10 sts on second side
  • RC 000; K 86 R’s (95) (104) decreasing raglan sleeve, using a 3-prong tool, as follows:
  • Size 1X: Decrease 1 st at each end every 2nd R 42 times; then K 2 R to RC 86 **NOTE
  • Size 2X: Decrease 1 st at each end every 2nd R 45 times; then K 1 R to RC 95; **NOTE
  • Size 3X: Decrease 1 st at each end every 2nd R 48 times; then K 4 R to RC 104; **NOTE
  • ** NOTE: As you are decreasing raglan sleeves the neck decreases begin also as follows:
  • At RC 76; (86) (94) put all sts to hold except 8 (8) (8) shoulder sts; carriage to hold; remove those sts onto WY
  • Put 56 (60) (68) center sts into work and remove onto waste yarn (WY)
  • Carriage setting off hold; *Continue knitting the raglan decreases down to 4 sts; no neck decreases
  • After decreases are completed; K 2 R (1) (4) R to the top; 4 sts remaining; take off on WY*
  • Re-set RC to 76 (86) (94); re-hang the other shoulder with purl side facing you and repeat * to * for second shoulder

SLEEVES: Make 2

  • Attach color changer; Tension 0/0; Cast on over 76 (76), (80) N’s in a 1 X 1 rib set up; Zig zag R, hang comb and weights; Broken toe cast on instructions above
  • Set the carriages for circular knitting; K 3 R; remove settings; COL
  • Tension: 1/1; Striped ribbing: K 4 R ribbing in MY; COL; holding MY off to left side of machine, change to CC; K 2R; Change to MY; K 2 R; Change to CC; K 2 R; Change to MY; K 10 R
  • Move all sts to MB; put ribber out of work; RC 000
  • Tension: 8
  • Increase on both sides as follows:
  • Size 1X: Increase 1 st at each end of every 3rd R 26 times; then every 4th R 16 times
  • Size 2X: Increase 1 st at each end of every 2nd R 5 times; then every 3rd R 44 times
  • Size 3X: Increase 1 st at each end of every 2nd R 17 times; then every 3rd R 38 times
  • K 1 R; Remove 10 sts on carriage side; K 1 R remove 10 sts on other side
  • Begin decreases as follows:
  • Size 1X: Decrease 1 st at each end of every row 46 times; then every 2nd R 17 times
  • Size 2X: Decrease 1 st at each end of every row 51 times; then every 2nd R 17 times
  • Size 3X: Decrease 1 st at each end of every row 56 times; then every 2nd R 22 times
  • Take remaining 14 sts off on WY

MAKE UP:

  • Steam all pieces; pull broken toe yarn until sts lie flat, steam and let dry; remove that yarn piece
  • Mattress st raglan seams front to sleeve, sleeve to back, etc. – leaving one seam open
  • Hang neck edge from WY and edges that are bound off; purl side facing you; K 1 R
  • Move every other st to the ribber; comb and weights
  • Knit striped ribbed neck band; Tension: 1/1; K 4 R ribbing in MY; COL; holding MY off to left side of machine, change to CC; K 2R; Change to MY; K 2 R; Change to CC; K 2 R; Change to MY; K 29R
  • Move ribber sts to MB
  • Tension: 10; K 1 R; Loop through a loop bind off
  • Mattress st last raglan seam and neck band
  • Mattress st side seams and under arms
  • Fold band in half to inside and loosely hand st band down on inside of neck edge
  • Weave in ends; lightly steam
